NRC increases oversight at Luminant's Texas plant due to safety concerns

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said yesterday it will increase oversight at Luminant Generation Co.’s nuclear plant near Glen Rose, Texas, due to security concerns.

The NRC found that the plant exceeded the agency’s assessment level of "very low" safety or security issues during an inspection that ended January 25. Luminant sent the NRC an April 2 letter explaining the reason for the violation and corrective actions it was taking.

NRC Region IV Administrator Marc Dapas said the agency will conduct an inspection and follow-up reviews in line with the finding’s significance.

“It should be noted that the plant remains secure,” Dapas said. “Before our inspectors left the site, we ensured that appropriate compensatory measures were implemented.”
