NRC schedules April 28 open house for Brunswick nuclear plant

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is hosting an open house April 28 in Ontario, New York, to review the 2014 safety performance of Duke Energy’s Brunswick nuclear power plant.

The two-unit plant is located near Southport, North Carolina, about 30 miles south of Wilmington. The open house is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m. in the Southport Community Building, located at 223 E. Bay St., Southport. NRC staff will be available to talk about the plant’s 2014 performance and the agency’s oversight and inspection of the facility.

According to the NRC, the plant operated safely in 2014.

“NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plant’s safety, and each year we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said. “Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.”

The NRC’s annual assessment letter and the most current performance information for the plant are available on the agency’s website, www.nrc.gov.
