NRC, Chicago Bridge and Iron AREVA to discuss MOX plant site review

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold a meeting on Thursday with representatives of Chicago Bridge and Iron AREVA Mixed Oxide (MOX) Services to discuss the results of a performance review on the ongoing construction of a MOX facility at a Savannah River site near Aiken, South Carolina.

The NRC concluded that construction practices were up to standards and that there were no areas that needed improvement in terms of quality or workplace safety.

NRC performance reviews cover construction oversight in the areas of fabrication, on-site building and engineering activity, as well as quality assurance, which covers the implementation of control programs and equipment testing and materials acquisition that ensures proper quality.

In the performance review letter that was sent to the company, the NRC said no corrective measures to current implementation and construction activities were needed and that overall performance of the project was rated as acceptable.

The public meeting will take place at 6 p.m. EDT in the Garden Conference Room at the Applied Research Center, 301 Gateway Drive, New Ellenton, South Carolina.
