New York sees $350 million through operation of Ginna nuclear facility

The operation of Exelon Generation’s R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant brings a $358 million benefit to New York's economy, the Nuclear Energy Institute said Feb. 6.

The plant generates $450 million across the U.S., the NEI study said.

NEI Vice President for Policy Development, Planning and Supplier Programs Richard Myers said the economic benefit to New York, the state and nation is huge.

“This study confirms that Ginna greatly strengthens the local, regional and state economies through job creation, tax payments and direct and secondary spending," Myers said.

Highlights of the study indicate Exelon provides higher-than-average wages at Ginna, the power plant's annual spending greatly impacts the state and nation, Ginna stands as the largest taxpayer in Wayne County, the facility is regarded as a reliable source of electricity and Ginna plays a vital role in producing clean energy in New York.

The study looked at the impact of the power plant through the year 2029.

"Ginna creates very positive financial impacts for the entire state of New York and, as this study shows, it is a very important asset for the local economy providing affordable, reliable, base load electricity that New York homeowners and businesses can count on," Myers said.
